No Stitches

Standard pterygium surgery uses stitches on your eye, making the recovery long and painful. Our surgical procedures use glue for reduced recovery time.

Pterygium Removal

Pterygium excision is performed to remove abnormal tissue that forms on the conjunctiva , often caused by long-term exposure to UV light, wind, or dust. It is often called surfer's eye and can affect vision.

Unlike cataract surgery, which involves the internal lens of the eye, pterygium surgery targets the eye's surface. A conjunctival graft is placed to cover the area where the growth was removed, and with modern no-stitches techniques, tissue glue is used instead of sutures, offering faster recovery and lower recurrence rates.

Pterygium Removed Using Glue

Choosing Focus Vision for your premium pterygium surgery in Brisbane, means choosing to avoid sutures in a no-stitches approach. During pterygium excision, a graft of tissue is taken from under the eye lid. This graft is then placed over the area where the pterygium was removed to stop it from growing back.

The most modern and refined technique is to use fibrin glue to attach this graft and avoid the irritation caused by stitches. This leads to less pain, shorter recovery and often improved cosmetic outcomes.

Common questions about Premium Pterygium Surgery:

What is a pterygium and when does it need to be removed?

A pterygium is an abnormal wedge-shaped growth of tissue on the white of the eye (conjunctiva) that extends onto the cornea. It is caused by long-term exposure to UV light, wind, and dust — earning the common name 'surfer's eye'. Small pterygia that are not growing and not affecting vision can often be monitored with lubricating drops. Surgery is recommended when the pterygium is growing towards the centre of the cornea, causing persistent redness or irritation, distorting vision, or causing significant cosmetic concern.

What is the no-stitch pterygium surgery technique?

Focus Vision performs premium pterygium surgery using a conjunctival autograft technique with fibrin tissue-glue instead of sutures. A small graft of healthy conjunctival tissue is taken from under the eyelid and used to cover the area where the pterygium was removed, preventing regrowth. Attaching this graft with medical-grade fibrin glue — rather than stitches — significantly reduces post-operative discomfort, speeds up recovery, and produces a much better cosmetic result. Stitches on the eye surface are a primary cause of prolonged irritation after pterygium surgery.

Will my pterygium come back after surgery?

Pterygium recurrence is very rare with modern techniques – the rate is around 1 in 1000. The conjunctival autograft technique used at Focus Vision has significantly lower recurrence rates than older bare sclera techniques. Wearing UV-protective wraparound sunglasses after surgery and in everyday life is strongly recommended to reduce the risk of recurrence. Our internationally trained corneal subspecialists have extensive experience in pterygium surgery and achieving excellent long-term cosmetic and functional results.

How much does pterygium surgery cost in Brisbane?

The cost of pterygium surgery at Focus Vision depends on your private health insurance. Pterygium removal is a Medicare-covered procedure, and private health insurance with hospital cover will contribute to theatre and anaesthetic fees. A full written cost estimate is provided at your consultation before any decision is made. Please contact our team to discuss your specific situation.

Is pterygium surgery painful?

The procedure itself is completely pain-free — it is performed under local anaesthetic with sedation, so you are heavily sedated and will not feel anything during the surgery. In the days following the operation, some irritation, redness, and a foreign body sensation are normal and expected. Most patients find this very manageable with the prescribed eye drops and oral medication. Avoiding stitches by using tissue glue significantly reduces post-operative discomfort compared with traditional pterygium surgery.

How long is the recovery after pterygium surgery?

Most patients take 3 or 4 days off work after sutureless pterygium surgery. The eye will be red and may feel gritty for two to three weeks as it heals.

Why should I have my pterygium removed by a corneal specialist?

Pterygium surgery is performed on the cornea — the most optically critical surface of the eye. Choosing a corneal subspecialist rather than a general ophthalmologist means your surgeon has completed dedicated international fellowship training in corneal surgery. At Focus Vision, Dr Cronin and Dr Gunn are among the most experienced corneal surgeons in Queensland, and their subspecialty training means they are specifically equipped to handle complex cases, minimise scarring, and achieve the best possible cosmetic outcomes.
