Why does laser eye surgery cost as much as it does?

LASIK is as a quick 15-minute procedure, so some people wonder why laser eye surgery costs so much. Let’s explore the factors that contribute to the overall fees for laser eye treatment.

  • Investment in Advanced Diagnostics

A modern LASIK clinic should invest in state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to ensure you are having the highest quality and safest surgery possible. At Focus Vision our commitment to excellence in this area is reflected in our diagnstic equipment costs, exceeding $700,000.

  • High-Tech Laser Equipment

The femtosecond laser, essential for the initial step of the procedure, can cost up to $1 million. Laser use incurs additional fees of $450-600 per eye. The excimer laser, crucial for reshaping the eye in LASIK and TransPRK, adds another $400,000 - $800,000 to the equipment expenses. Not all lasers are equal and we have invested in the latest generation of technology.

  • The Laser Environment

Maintaining these advanced lasers in a controlled environment requires meticulous temperature and humidity control – we choose to do this in a purpose built theatre in a private day hospital. No other laser in Queensland is housed in a facility that meets the rigorous standards of an accredited day hospital. You can rest assured that your treatment will be performed in an environment that has to meet extremely high standards.

  • Surgeon’s Expertise

Becoming a qualified eye surgeon in Australia requires approximately 15 years of education and training, with additional training for subspecialization in the cornea (often completed overseas as with our doctors). Not all laser surgeons have undertaken this extra fellowship training to become recognised as a corneal subspecialist. The benefit of your surgeon’s expertise is significant.

  • Operational Costs

Running a world-class laser refractive surgery clinic involves ongoing expenses, including premises, highly trained staff, insurance, and more.

  • Investing in your vision

At Focus Vision, we believe in transparency regarding the cost of laser eye surgery in Brisbane, as well as other lens and laser eye surgery procedures.
